Thoughts, Ramblings and A Little Piece of My Soul.

I'm not movie critic, and definately not one to base my opinions and predictions of movies on fact. Basically, i just watch the trailer, think about it, then give it a thumbs up or thumbs down.

In the case of Finding Nemo, I warily gave it a thumbs down. I'm not going to say I was wrong for standing that way. Box Office totals for opening weekend were about 70 million. That's a nice chunk of change. It's hard to argue against that.

But, of course, I will explain why I stand by my decision:

We'll say that today's 70 million is equal to Monster INC's 64 million dollar opening weekend. I'm sure you can agree that movie tickets have risen at least a little since that time. So basically, everyone who saw Monster's inc came back and saw Finding Nemo.

Which leads me to my second point. Finding Nemo is riding on the glory that is Pixar. It doesn't make it a great movie. Look at how well the Matrix 2 did, even though most people agree the story was lacking. The story line for Finding Nemo seems pretty cookie cutter standard. Take a little mermaid, throw in a little all american tale, give it the pixar style flavor, put it all in a blender and shake it up.

Also, there isn't much competition for Finding Nemo. It's pretty much the only family movie that's worth going to see (i'll give it that much). It should thrive rather well. We shall see the box office numbers for week 2, with movies like 2 Fast 2 Frivolous coming out. It won't steal away Finding Nemo's target audience, but there are alot of young adult females (and effeminate men) who will now have to make a choice on which movie to watch. If it does well this following weekend, then we'll at least know the movie has received positive feedback, though i have yet to hear anyone I know watch it yet.

So overall, I stand by what I said, though knowing me, I'll end up going to watch Finding Nemo. If not in the theatres, then i'm sure i'll be so lucky as to find everyone I know owning it on DVD.

But just try to keep me away from 2 Fast 2 Frivolous tomorrow.
